Profile Information

What kind of car do you have?
I have been involved in motor racing from an early age when I first became enamored with driving go-karts in the 1960's. In my early 20's I worked with Bob McQueen in Knoxville, TN (LeGrand F-B's and ex-NART Ferrari 350 Can-Am car) and also in Atlanta crewing on Wilbur Picketts Alfa-Romeo U-2 Trans-Am team for a short period. I also helped McQueen with cosmetics and go-fering on his 1971 D-Production National Championship Datsun 2000.
I finally got behind the wheel of a race car in 1977 when I completed the construction of my Caldwell D-13 Formula Vee. I would end up racing this car on and off for nearly thirty years. I opened up an auto restoration shop in Westline in 1998 and have worked on all mannner of foreign and domestic classics since then.
After being invited to show my artwork at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen last year, I decided to pursue a career in motorsports art and now spend most of my time at my new vocation. I still operate my shop however, and I try to race my Laser F-Vee when time and money permit.
I currently own the Laser, my original D-13, a restored 21 window V-W Microbus, and a severely un-restored 1963 Austin 997 Mini-Cooper. Also my wife Maxine and I have a 2000 Audi TT for current-era motoring enjoyment.
I just want to use this opportunity to introduce myself to The Cortile community. I am a motorsports artist that the Cortile organization has invited to exhibit at this years event. I work mainly in watercolor and a pen and ink wash and my subject matter is pretty much exclusively racing oriented. I have posted some of my work here and hope those of you perusing my page enjoy what I've displayed. Some of these images are also available as Giclee' prints on my web site- (vintagesportautoart.com) if you would like to acquire one for your collection..
I am really looking forward to exhibiting at the Cortile - the combination of fine Italian cars and vintage racing promises to be a spectacular experience. Hope to see you there!

Wow! Small world Greg. Nice work. I painted 11 full sheet watercolors in my life. 5 were Monterey Historic Races posters and one of those sold at Christies Auctions for a bunch (I got nothing). Painting was a terror and an agony. No painting in many years.
I have not had many real heroes in my life, but John Knox has always shared the short list with my dad.
I'm in L.A. so I won't make it to Pittsburgh.

Hi again Greg,
I uploaded my Monterey poster art. I also designed the posters and programs for 5 or 6 years.

Greg,

Bernie invited me to display some of my work at the Cortile this July. I wanted to touch bases with you as I understand you also will have work on display. This is an exciting adventure for me and I really look forward to meeting and learning about other fellow travelers on this marvelous art journey! I have been at this now since 2007 when I retired ... just retuning to my love and passion for those cars and art which I lost in my world of work. What a luxury to be able to find my old roots, passions and excitement. I look forward to meeting you in person in July.

Cheers
Phil

Greg,

This has been a real journey not only in the pursuit of art and passion but all the wonderful people I have met along the way! I look forward to meet up with you in July. I too look forward to displaying my work at The Cortile. Everyone's likes/dislikes are different - sometimes it's color, sometimes it's composition and sometimes it is just a feeling from the heart. Phil
